I was surprised to find that pre-made torque rods for split elevators are relatively unavailable. There are a few light duty ones, but nothing heavy duty that I could find. I really fretted over this piece because I couldn't make one and weld on the control horn extension. I wanted something all in one piece for overall strength and reliability. After all, if you lose elevator control, you lose the airplane. I decided to bend one out of a single piece of piano wire, including the control horn extension. This required bending in a twist to allow for easy installation of the control linkage. The wood plug is there to keep the contol linkage from sliding up, and the wrapped and soldered wire is there for added assurance. The wire on the bottom is there to keep the rod from spreading, although I think the wire is heavy enough already that it wouldn't bend. Overall, I'm pleased with the outcome. |
